It’s a Mountain Range

Why MENA’s retail peak now starts before the school run and ends after the fireworks, and what that means for media, creative, search, intelligence and data.

In most of the world, “peak” is a weekend. Maybe a week,

This region never quite took Black Friday at face value. Friday is a holy day here, so the market renamed it White Friday and got on with the shopping. That small act of cultural editing turned out to be a sign of things to come. MENA doesn’t copy the global retail calendar. It rewrites it.

Google’s latest Retail Peak MENA report confirms what our teams have seen in the accounts for a while: peak is no longer a single summit in late November. It is a four-month mountain range of overlapping moments. Back-to-School, Saudi National Day, retailer mega-sales, Singles’ Day, White Friday, Cyber Monday, UAE National Day, Christmas gifting, end-of-year sales and, sitting on the horizon, Ramadan.¹

The prize is getting bigger too. Redseer puts MENA eCommerce at $57.5bn in 2025, heading to around $64bn in 2026, with Saudi Arabia alone forecast at $26.3bn and the UAE at $16.8bn.²

So the question isn’t “when does peak start?” It’s “which peak are you actually planning for?”

1. The Shape of the Mountain: KSA and UAE Climb Differently

Treat the Gulf as one market and you’ll get the timing wrong in at least one of them.

Saudi Arabia peaks early and peaks often. Retail search interest in the Kingdom climbs from late August, crests around Back-to-School and Saudi National Day on 23 September, dips, then spikes again for White Friday and the end-of-year sales.³ Brand searches in KSA rose 8% period on period between 14 and 27 September, and discount searches jumped 32% in September.⁴ For many Saudi shoppers, “peak” has already happened once before most global brands have even briefed their agencies.

The UAE rises and stays up. UAE search interest lifts at Back-to-School and then holds a high plateau right through to December, rather than spiking and collapsing.³ Shopping app active users in the UAE grew 28% year on year in October and 30% year on year in November.⁵

In short: KSA is a series of sprints. The UAE is a long climb with a view at the top. Your plan should reflect both.

2. Media: October is When November is Won

The single most useful line in the latest Google Peak report is also the least glamorous: retail CPCs in October ran roughly 10% lower than in November, and December CPCs were around 15% lower.⁶

Read that again with a budget spreadsheet open. The cheapest time to build demand is the month most brands spend waiting.

And October isn’t quiet. KSA app downloads were up 17% year on year before November even began.⁵ Then, when November arrived, KSA downloads surged 43% period on period.⁷ The shoppers who installed early were already one tap away when the discounts went live.

What we’d do with that:

Front-load, don’t just flight. Shift a meaningful share of brand and consideration budget into October, while auctions are calmer and shoppers are forming their shortlists

Stop starving the algorithms. AI Max, Performance Max and App campaigns learn from volume. Artificial daily caps in October mean a half-trained machine in November

Keep a buffer for the surge. Going dark at 3pm on White Friday because a cap was hit is the most expensive saving in retail

Ramp down gently. Google’s own guidance for App campaigns is to cut post-sale bids and budgets in gradual steps of about 20% over a week, not all at once⁸

Put Demand Gen to work. Google reports that when Demand Gen spend reaches 8% to 20% of Search plus PMax spend, overall brand CPA falls by around 5%⁹

The old model was “save it all for the weekend”. The new one is “pay less to be remembered, then collect”.

3. Creative: One Mountain, Several Climates

A four-month peak has a creative problem nobody talks about: fatigue. Nobody wants to see “SALE” shouted at them for sixteen weeks.

The report is clear that shopper mindset changes as the season moves. October is about discovery and installs. November is about deals and brands people already know. December moves to gifting, with gifting searches up 23% month on month across the region, 31% in the UAE and 17% in KSA.⁶ By the end of December the mood shifts again, towards self-improvement, with Sports and Fitness searches up 19% in KSA and 21% in the UAE.⁶

That’s four different emotional briefs in one season. Our view:

Build a creative system, not a campaign. A modular platform with a strong brand core and swappable moment layers (National Day, White Friday, gifting, resolutions) keeps you consistent without being repetitive

Respect the national moments. Saudi National Day and UAE National Day are moments of pride, not a green-and-flag filter over a discount banner. Audiences can tell the difference

Write in the right Arabic. Khaleeji, Egyptian and Levantine audiences don’t speak the same Arabic, and they don’t search in it either. Transcreation beats translation every time

Let creators carry discovery. Shorts and creator partnerships suit October’s browsing mood. Google has launched a Peak Creator Directory covering 150+ YouTube creators across the UAE and Saudi Arabia, with estimated rates¹⁰

Pivot the December message on time. Swap price-led creative for curated gift guides, then refresh for fitness, wellbeing and home upgrades before the new year starts

The brands that win the whole season will be the ones whose creative ages well over four months.

4. SXO: November Searches Are Memories, Not Research

This is the insight that should keep search teams up at night.

When discounts go live, shoppers don’t start from scratch. According to the report, they search for the brands they discovered in October.¹¹ During White Friday week, brand and retailer searches rose 20% in KSA and 11% in the UAE compared with the week before.¹¹

In other words, November search is largely navigational. The shopper already knows where they want to go. Your job is to make sure the road is open.

What that means for search experience optimisation (SEO, AEO and GEO together):

Own your brand results page before November. Sitelinks, promotions, app links, reviews and store information should all be accurate and ready, because this is where remembered intent lands

Keep evergreen sale URLs. A /white-friday page that lives all year builds authority season after season. A new URL every November starts from zero every November

Publish moment pages early. Gift guides, National Day collections and Back-to-School hubs need to be live and indexed weeks before the moment, not the day before

Answer the conversational question. Shoppers are asking AI-powered search things like “best gift for my father under 500 dirhams”. Clear, structured, bilingual content is what gets cited in AI answers

Don’t forget the app store. With downloads spiking in November, app store listings are a search surface too. Treat them like one

Test the site under pressure. A page that loads in two seconds in September and eight seconds on White Friday isn’t an experience. It’s a queue

Search doesn’t create demand in November. It collects the demand you built in October. Or it hands it to a competitor.

5. Marketing Intelligence: Read the Calendar You’re Actually In

MENA runs on more than one calendar, and peak planning that ignores this will keep getting surprised.

Payday matters. The report marks a Salary Week spike in late October.³ In a region with strong monthly pay cycles, the day money lands shapes the day baskets fill up. Map your bursts to payroll, not just to promotions.

Ramadan is moving closer. The Hijri calendar moves about 11 days earlier each year against the Gregorian one. Astronomical estimates put the start of Ramadan 2027 in early February, 2028 in late January and 2030 at the very start of January, with a second Ramadan starting in late December 2030. Within a few years, Ramadan and the year-end sales will meet in the middle. Brands that plan Q4 and Ramadan as separate seasons will soon need to plan them as one.

Retailer moments set the pace. The report flags “Retailer Moments” in October and November as peaks in their own right.¹ In this region, the big marketplaces don’t just join the calendar. They set it. Watching their announcements is as important as watching search trends.

Use the data as a map, not a promise. The report’s charts are indexed search trends. They show the shape of demand, not its size, and they describe one year. Useful for direction. Dangerous as a forecast on their own.

6. Data Infrastructure: The Mountain Punishes Weak Foundations

A one-weekend peak can hide measurement problems. A four-month peak can’t.

The report makes a strong claim: that brand discovery in October leads to brand searches and app adoption in November.⁷ It is a persuasive pattern. It is also a correlation. If you want to invest in October with confidence, you need to prove that link for your own brand.

Our checklist:

Measure incrementality, not just attribution. Run geo tests or holdouts on October brand spend, so you know what November would have looked like without it

Bid on margin, not revenue. Discount-heavy months make revenue a misleading signal. Value-based bidding should learn from profit where possible

Connect app and web. Shoppers who installed in October and bought in November are one customer. GA4 and Firebase should see them that way

Get consent right. Saudi Arabia’s PDPL and the UAE’s data protection law both put consent at the centre. Consent Mode and server-side tagging protect signal quality without cutting corners

Clean the feed. Merchant Center feeds power Shopping, PMax, Demand Gen and shoppable YouTube. Wrong prices or missing stock in November cost money by the hour¹²

Freeze the code. Agree a tagging and site-release freeze before White Friday. Peak week is not the time to discover a broken purchase event

Bring the stores in. Malls still matter enormously in the Gulf. Offline conversion data gives a truer picture of what online media actually drives

AI-powered campaigns are only as good as the signals they receive. Over four months, small data gaps become big wasted budgets.

Final Thoughts

MENA didn’t adopt the global peak. It stretched it, renamed it and wrapped it around its own national moments, pay cycles and religious calendar.

The brands that win this season won’t be the loudest on White Friday. They’ll be the ones who were remembered in October, found in November, gifted in December and measured properly throughout.

Peak isn’t a day to prepare for. It’s a mountain range to plan across. Pack accordingly.

Discover More Insights From The MENA Region

Download the new whitepaper from Incubeta MENA: The “New Gulf” Readiness Gap.

The “New Gulf” is moving faster than many organisations are built to market in.
