The heads of the ANA, the 4A’s and the IAB shared a stage and named the industry’s top priority. It wasn’t AI, it was outcomes – and we agree, this is the right priority. We also sat in the invite-only CMO sessions. They ran under Chatham House rules, so you’ll get themes here, not names. Four stood out to us, each mapping closely to conversations we’ve been leading throughout 2026 and will carry into 2027.

1. Marketing Has To Speak the Language Of the P&L

This is a gap we often see: most CEOs judge marketing on revenue and margin, but far fewer marketers report that way. We’re speaking two different languages, and finance is filling the gap by deciding more of how marketing money gets spent.

The fix isn’t a new dashboard. It’s knowing what each part of the marketing mix costs and returns, in terms a CFO already uses. When the mid-year budget raid comes, “impressions and share of voice” won’t protect a line item. “Cut this and here’s what happens to the forecast in 18 months” might.

The point we’d underline: putting AI on top of messy, disconnected data doesn’t give you insight. It gives you the wrong answers faster. The foundation has to come first. In practice, that means connecting measurement and data before layering on more AI, not after.

2. Being Found by AI Isn’t the Goal. Being Asked For Is.

Every brand in the room wants to show up when someone asks an AI assistant for the best option in their category. That’s table stakes now. What was really being highlighted was that the real win is the customer asking for you by name. Their AI agent will go and get what they tell it to get.

So brand building doesn’t get less important in an AI-shaped funnel. It gets more important. Discoverability is the floor; demand for your name is the ceiling.

One story really illustrated why this matters. One leader described launching a product that AI answers kept ignoring. When the team dug in, they found a single community forum carried around 40% of the weight in what the models surfaced for their category. It was a place they’d never thought to show up. The sources AI reads aren’t always the ones your media plan covers.

3. The Sea of Sameness Is Coming Fast

The line we heard most often, in different words, was this: if everyone uses the same tools the same way, everyone gets the same output. One speaker asked an AI tool for a campaign idea, then counted how many ads already running in North America used the same visual. By their count, it was 172.

The point wasn’t “don’t use AI.” It was don’t let it replace the thinking. Be brutally efficient with it, and just as demanding about being distinct. Our take is that speed is the easy win – but distinctiveness is the one that lasts.

Consumers are already policing this. One global brand told the room that when a campaign took off, people quickly accused it of being AI-made. The team had to release behind-the-scenes footage to prove it was real. Trust is now part of the creative brief, and the industry is working on standards so people can tell what’s AI and what isn’t.

4. The Talent Squeeze Is In the Middle

When the room was polled on where the talent problem is most urgent, most hands went up for middle managers, not entry level. Teams are flatter, scope is wider, and AI is taking over the tasks that used to teach junior people judgment.

A distinction came up at almost every table, and it’s the one we think matters most: there’s a big gap between using AI like a search engine and actually training it. That means feeding it your context, correcting it, and teaching it how you think until it works like a second brain. The first is a habit. The second is a skill, and it’s where the difference between good work and great work is going to live.

It also can’t be left to individuals. AI is most useful when it’s connected to an organization’s own data, in its own protected environment. That’s a leadership decision, not a training module.

What This Means For 2027

The ANA, 4A’s and IAB are now working together on five shared priorities: trust and transparency, AI-powered marketing operations, measurement and commercial models, talent, and AI policy and governance. When the tables voted, most put governance first. You can’t scale what you can’t trust.

For us, it confirmed something we already believed. The brands that win next year won’t be the ones with the most AI. They’ll be the ones that can prove what their marketing is worth, stay distinct while everyone else converges, and build teams that know how to direct the tools rather than just use them.

That’s the work we want to be doing with marketers in 2027. If any of these themes are on your plate, we’d love to compare notes.

In case you missed it, ANA Masters of Marketing took over Orlando this October, and we were there for three days, surrounded by a few thousand marketers, and a lot of talk about AI. The headline came early.
