Lianne Godfrey

Name Lianne Godfrey
Job Title Head of Tech & Services
Location Cape Town, South Africa
Time at Incubeta  Started in September 2015 – 8+ years

What does your role involve?
I manage a team of 11 in the Cape Town office, focusing on different technology platforms such as the Google Marketing Platform and Feedonomics, and services like feed management, trafficking, tech support, etc.).

I am actively involved in new business and onboarding of sell-side clients but mostly I’m focused on enabling my team to do their best work!

What does a typical day look like for you?

I start my ‘Admin’ timer in Harvest, say ‘good morning’ in my two team Slack channels, and check other Slack messages and emails. I generally open Sprout Social and LinkedIn quite early on too, before I get too stuck in things and run out of time. I always have too many tabs open with articles I still want to read!

At 9:30 am I have a daily check-in with my T&S team, in which I share company updates from leadership level and we share what we did on the weekend or what show we are watching on Netflix. The rest of my morning is generally filled with meetings, primarily one-on-ones as I really value building relationships with my team members and other colleagues across the company. Knowledge sharing is something I’m very passionate about so I love connecting people and ideas which I often use these catch ups for as well. Lately I’ve been working on a few proposals and have calls with new clients or leads, going through the onboarding or talking them through our support services and commercials. Mid-afternoon, I fetch my children from school and then go back to my desk to work through my to do’s. I schedule all tasks in my calendar but always run out of time and spend the last bit of my day moving tasks to the next day before I log off.

What do you love most about your job?

Hands down – the people! I really treasure the supportive work environment I’m part of and have built some great relationships with amazing Incubetans over the years.
The second is the flexible work environment. I mostly work from home and even when I go into the office, I’ll leave in the afternoon to go fetch my children from school. Having this flexibility helps me to strike the balance between work and parenting and gives me the best opportunity to be both a ‘good enough’ mom and ‘good enough’ employee.

What’s your favorite project that you have worked on so far?

The Ignition Series

What do you think we could expect to see in the digital industry in the future?

More algorithms, more technology, more complexity, more out-the-box thinking required.

What book(s) are you reading at the moment?

Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead (Brené Brown).

Before that I read How Google Works (Eric Schmidt) which was also very inspirational. Sadly I don’t read much as I have three children and by the time they go to bed I just want to veg on the couch.

How do you unwind after a long day at work?

Definitely with a big glass of red!

Best piece of advice for working in digital?

Never stop asking questions.
